Help Yourself

Things you can do to help your own mental health.

You can’t see mental health problems, they are not visible and there’s not always a quick solution. Just like injuries on the pitch, mental health problems don't often disappear overnight. However, there are steps you can take to improve how you feel.

1. Get moving

  • Grab a football and get outdoors, join a five-a-side or your local Sunday league. But remember it’s not just about football, there are lots of things you can do to get active: walking; cycling; running; swimming; – it’s all good stuff. Even simple changes like taking the stairs not the lift.

2. Be sociable

  • Spend time with people you enjoy being with, have a pint and a chat with your pals after the game. Being with loved ones can lift your mood, make you feel happier and more secure.

3. Learn

  • Try and take up a new skill to improve how you feel about yourself. You could take up a new challenge or project to make or fix something. Why not broaden your culinary skills beyond beans on toast; or brush up on your rusty DIY skills?

4. Give

  • Giving up your time can make you feel good about yourself. Spend time with someone you know who needs a bit of help or volunteer for a cause you are passionate about.
